What is Colon Hydrotherapy?

Colon Hydrotherapy is also known as Colonic, Colon Irrigation, Colon Therapy, High Enema and Colon Cleansing. The most common form of Colon Hydrotherapy is the enema. A colonic is an extended form of enema.

Enema use dated back to ancient Egypt where water was infused into the rectum by using reeds from the Nile. Enema is mentioned in many ancient cultures including the Sumerians, Chinese, Hindus, Greeks and Romans.

Colon Hydrotherapy is a safe, effective method of removing waste from the large intestine, without the use of drugs. Colon Hydrotherapy rejuvenates every cell of the body.

Colonics release toxins, cleanse the blood, empower the immune system, and restore the pH balance in the body. It hydrates the body; bodily fluids are able to carry nutrients and waste more effectively, these fluids include lymph, blood, mucus, intercellular fluid, and extracellular fluid.

Additionally, Colon Hydrotherapy softens and loosens waste. It is easier for the bowel to evacuate softened, hydrated waste than a hard, dehydrated mass. Next it Tones the Bowels, where water enters the bowel, softening and loosening waste, creating the reflux for evacuation.

How Is Colonic Cleansing Done?

The colon evacuates through normal peristalsis. This may be repeated several times during a session, thereby exercising the muscles that make up the colon.

Colon size in volume is approximately 1 gallon. This varies depending on the size and condition of the individual. It does not take the exact amount of water the colon holds in order to cleanse the whole colon.

By introducing filtered and temperature-regulated water into the colon, the waste is softened and loosened, resulting in evacuation through natural peristalsis. Peristalsis is waves of movement sweeping waste through and out of the colon.

The colon is filled, and then emptied through natural peristalsis several times throughout the session. The water flows in only, and then is released on request by the client with a feeling of fullness in the abdomen or on the judgment of the therapist. Then water and waste material can exit.

Sessions last approximately 45 minutes. The gentle passage of water is controlled by the therapist operating the colon hydrotherapy equipment. The speculum, a disposable plastic tube inserted into the rectum, has two hoses attached to it outside of the body. The smaller hose is for the inflow of water into the colon and the larger hose is for waste and water outflow from the colon.

The waste goes out the speculum into the disposable waste line through to the illuminated glass viewing tube. This is the point of opportunity to observe what comes out of the intestines.

The equipment is plumbed into the sewer system after it passes through the viewing tube. This is called a closed system. All waste is contained entirely within the system so there is no mess or unpleasant odors or exposed bacterial waste.

The water is filtered through two separate water filters to sterilize and purify the water. The speculum and hoses are disposable and for one time use only. All work is done face up and the client is covered at all times to ensure modesty while the therapist is massaging the abdomen to loosen and assist the direction of waste movement.

Colon Hydrotherapy Questions

Is colon hydrotherapy completely safe?

Yes. Modern colon hydrotherapy equipment and treatments are much safer than the common enema. Hydrotherapy utilizes pre-sterilized, disposable hoses and speculums. These disposables are used only once during a single therapy session. The machine is also cleaned with a hospital grade disinfectant after each client. Properly administered, there is absolutely no danger of contamination.

How does a colon hydrotherapy treatment compare to an enema?

An enema only reaches the rectum and lower part of the colon (sigmoid colon), whereas with colon hydrotherapy, the entire length of the colon (the large intestinal tract, approximately 5½ to 6 feet in length) is reached. Colon hydrotherapy is many more times effective. The small intestine is not specifically involved in a colon hydrotherapy treatment. The small intestine may be cleansed with the help of an oral (herb-based) intestinal cleanser.

Do treatments hurt?

Generally, no. However, very few clients do experience a slight discomfort at times because of gas and fecal matter being cleared out by the water. Most clients feel much better after removing the cause of their discomfort; toxins, waste and gas. Most people report their sessions as being rejuvenating.

How long does a treatment take?

Actual treatment time is about 45 minutes but you should plan a total session visit of one hour in duration.

Does menstrual period obstruct hydrotherapy session?

Not at all. In fact, it’s usually a good time to receive a treatment since your body is already cleansing. Some clients even report less or no menstrual discomfort due to the treatments. Your flow will not interfere with the success of the treatment.

What should I do to prepare for a colon hydrotherapy cleansing?

If time allows prior to the day of your session, try to eliminate or minimize your meat intake, increase fruits, vegetables and water. The day of your session, refrain from eating at least 2 hours before the cleansing, be as relaxed as possible and maintain a good attitude.

Do I need to take acidophilus after a colon cleansing?

It is recommended to use acidophilus, but not because the treatment washes out intestinal flora. Taking acidophilus subsequent to a colon cleansing is beneficial because it helps to improve the bacterial balance in the colon.

Can I work directly after having colon hydrotherapy?

Certainly. You can resume your regular routine just as you would after a regular bowel movement.

Should I see my doctor before my first colon hydrotherapy session?

If you have a concern about your health or the appropriateness of colon hydrotherapy you should consult a doctor. If you were diagnosed with the following contraindications below, you would not be a candidate for colon hydrotherapy treatments at the present time unless you have a written prescription from an MD or ND showing supervision over our services for the contraindications.

However, we do have several other colon cleansing programs available that may be suitable for your specific needs. Professionally administered colon hydrotherapy is safe, and generally if you are free of the sited conditions, a medical examination prior to therapy, should not be necessary.

Colonics Services We Offer

Generally, it is recommended to do 3 colonics within 7 days. The first session releases waste that you would eliminate on your own. You want to clean that area again before there is time for waste to build up again.

The large intestine is the area being cleaned and is 5 feet long with folds and crevices where matter has been embedded. Remember, it didn’t take a day to embed it there. The total number of cleanses you will need can be determined after you discuss your health history and your individual needs with our therapist.

We are open Monday through Sunday, seven days a week. By appointment only.

About Lynda

A California native from Los Angeles, I was influenced by my grandmother, whose approach to bowel management included giving figs, prunes, castor oil, and dispensing enemas to all the grandchildren for nothing other than health, maintenance and love.

Years later I started doing my own enemas as a way to deepen the effects of various cleanses. Advancing my education in whole body cleansing and positive results, I have constantly gained more knowledge. Committed to holistic health practices, I practice and surrounds herself with integrative doctors, naturopathic doctors, acupuncturists, chiropractors, medical hypnotists, nutritionists, massage therapists, and others to support my constant evolving for clients and myself.

* I obtained my colonic certification at The Myrtle Tree, a well-known center for health studies, in 2003.

* I still train and certify people in Colon Hydrotherapy locally and travels to teach groups and privately one-on-one.

* I am a Certified Colon Hydro Therapist, Certified Massage Therapist and Licensed Esthetician.

* I have continued to serve on the Advisory Board of American Career College for massage education since 2006.

* In 2017 I completed Access and Body Talk Fundamentals to further assist the healing of others by using one’s innate wisdom.

My greatest enjoyment comes from working with clients to cleanse and detoxify their digestive tract. I enjoy helping people reach their goals for healthy living and wellbeing.

I believe each person should feel free to explore and experiment to find out for themselves which system works best in their situation.  This exploration requires time, discipline, perseverance, trial and error and a sense of humor to cleanse effectively and thoroughly.
